There are different ways of viewing and customizing search results in Arctos. You only need to be logged in if you want to download your search results.

• Specimen Search – At the top of the home page for Specimen Search are 6 “See results as” options for viewing data. The default is “Specimen Records” which outputs the data in a customizable table (see below); you can also view them as a HTML table (“HTML Specimen Records” option) in the browser. If you are simply exploring Arctos for particular holdings, a useful option is “Specimen Summary” which provides a summary count by selected criteria such as scientific name, taxonomy, geography, year, or sex; you can then click on the count to access the specific records. If you want to visualize the data on a map, select “BerkeleyMapper Map” or “KML” as an option. The “Graph” option also allows you to visualize the data but in chart form (e.g., “Specimens by State” or “Specimens by Year”).
• Specimen Records – At the top of the Specimen Records table is a total count of the records that were returned from your search, and to the right of that is a drop down labeled “Tools: Map, Customize, or Download.” Under “Customize Form” are two options: “Add or Remove Data Fields (columns),” and “Remove Checked Rows.” Selecting the first option will bring a pop-up window where you can choose what fields you want to see in the table, in addition to the standard default columns (be sure to hit the “Save and Refresh” button). You can also remove unwanted records in your search results by checking the box(es) in the first column of the records and selecting “Remove Checked Rows” in the “Customize Form” options. In the same Tools dropdown are options for mapping the data using either BerkeleyMapper or Google Maps. You can also select to “Show Map” in the upper right of the specimen records page, which will display a thumbnail map of the points with geographic coordinates. At the bottom of the records table is an option for changing the number of rows to view on the page (default is 100, maximum is 5000).
• Encumbered Data – All data are accessible to the public unless they are masked (encumbered) by curators or collection managers for specific reasons. These data are accessible only to individuals who have Arctos permissions to manage the collection with the encumbered data.
